Choosing a bag

Camera bags that look like handbags: totes, inserts and what to know

You can carry a camera without carrying a camera bag. There are two main ways to do it, and each suits a different kind of trip.

Option 1: a camera tote

A camera tote is a handbag-style bag with padded, movable dividers built in. It's made to carry a camera, a lens or two, and your everyday things, and to look at home in a café or on a plane.

Good for: city trips, travel days, and anyone who wants one bag that does everything.
Watch for: weight. Structured totes, especially leather ones, can be heavy before you add a camera. Shoulder-only straps also get tiring on long walking days, so look for one that includes a crossbody strap.

Option 2: a padded insert in your own bag

A camera insert is a padded box with dividers that drops into any bag you already own. Your favourite tote becomes a camera bag, and back again when you take the insert out.

Good for: people who already love their bags, light kits, and keeping costs down.
Watch for: fit. Measure the inside of your bag before you buy, and make sure the bag has a zip or closure; an open tote with a camera inside is an invitation in a crowd.
