The Domke F-3X Super Compact: a no-fuss canvas bag for shooting days
Domke bags were designed by a newspaper photographer for working photographers, and it shows. The F-3X is soft, quick to get into and holds far more than its size suggests. Here's what it does well and what to know before you buy.

Why it's in my kit
The F-3X is the bag for days that are all about shooting. It's soft canvas, so it moulds to your hip instead of bumping against it, and the main compartment sits wide open under a single flap. Camera out, camera back, flap down: it's the quickest bag I own to work from.
It also wears in rather than wears out. Domke canvas fades and softens over the years, and plenty of photographers are still using bags they bought decades ago.
Who makes it
Jim Domke was a photojournalist who designed his first bag in the 1970s because nothing on the market suited the way news photographers work: fast, on foot, often in a crowd. The original F-2 became a classic, and the F-3X is its compact sibling, resized for today's smaller cameras.
Main features
- Holds a camera with two or three lenses and small accessories. With a mirrorless kit there's room left for your phone, wallet and a light layer.
- Water-resistant cotton canvas with a foam-lined base for some cushioning underneath.
- Three main compartments, one of which splits in two with a removable padded divider.
- Six pockets, including two side pockets and Domke's "upside-down" zip pouch inside the flap, which is handy for cards and filters.
- A Gripper strap with rubber woven into it, so it stays put on your shoulder instead of sliding off.
- A removable hand strap you can use whether the flap is open or closed.
- Plain looks. Black canvas with a small label: it reads as a work bag, not an expensive camera bag.

What to know before you buy
It's lightly padded
Apart from the foam base and the divider, the walls are just canvas. That's what makes it soft and quick, but it won't protect a camera from a hard knock the way a fully padded bag will. I keep a lens in a soft pouch if it's sharing space with other things.
The flap is fast, not locked
The flap closes with snap hooks rather than a zip, so it's quick to open, which also means it's quick for someone else. In crowded places, wear it in front with the flap against you.
It's wide on the hip
At around 38 cm across, the F-3X is a little wide for a petite frame. Shorten the strap so the bag sits high, and it carries comfortably.
Where to buy in Australia
The F-3X sells for roughly US$165–190 at American camera stores. Australian camera shops stock Domke too, so compare local prices and shipping before ordering from overseas.
It's a good fit if
- You want the fastest possible access to your camera.
- You prefer a soft bag that moulds to you over a rigid one.
- You'd like something understated that doesn't look precious.
- You're happy to trade some padding for speed and lightness.
