The Wotancraft Pilot 7L: a weatherproof camera messenger with room to spare
When my kit grows past a body and two small lenses, or I want a tablet with me, the Pilot is the bag I reach for. It's roomy, sheds weather and opens in one movement. Here's what it does well and what to check before you buy.

Why it's in my kit
The Pilot fills the gap between a small satchel and a backpack. It holds a mirrorless camera with a couple of extra lenses, plus a tablet or small laptop behind its own divider, and it still wears like a shoulder bag. That makes it my choice for longer trips and wilder places, where I want more kit with me and weather is part of the day.
The detail I love most is the flap. It curves around both sides of the bag, so there are no gaps for rain or dust, and it closes with a magnetic buckle that clicks shut on its own. No zip to fight while you're trying to catch a moment.
Who makes it
Wotancraft began in 2009 as a leather workshop in Taipei, Taiwan. Its first handmade camera bags were inspired by vintage Swiss army equipment, and that utilitarian, military-heritage look still runs through everything it makes.
Main features
- 7 litres of space for a mirrorless body, two or three lenses and your day things.
- Water-repellent nylon canvas outside, for rain and dust.
- Zipperless wraparound flap that closes off the sides as well as the top.
- FIDLOCK magnetic buckle and a quick-adjust strap, so you can open the bag and shorten or lengthen the strap with one hand.
- A laptop divider and two hook-and-loop dividers included, so you can set the inside up for your kit.
- Detachable shoulder strap with a shoulder pad, which matters with a bigger load.
- Optional add-on pouches (sold separately) for a phone, coins, batteries and cards that clip on outside or inside.

What to know before you buy
Check the laptop divider against your device
The divider suits a tablet or a small laptop. Measure yours against the inside of the bag before you count on carrying it.
A full bag is heavy on one shoulder
The bag itself is light for its size, but 7 litres of camera gear adds up. Use the shoulder pad, wear it across your body, and be honest about which lens can stay at home.
It looks like a bag, not a handbag
The Pilot's style is rugged and utilitarian rather than feminine. It doesn't shout "camera", but it won't pass for a handbag at dinner the way the AEST Capture does.
Rushfaster's returns
Rushfaster, the official Australian stockist, offers 30-day change-of-mind returns. Pack your kit into it as soon as it arrives to check the fit.
It's a good fit if
- Your kit is a body and two or three lenses, or you want a tablet with you.
- You travel somewhere wet, dusty or outdoors.
- You want fast, zip-free access to your camera.
- You'd rather not carry a backpack.
For a lighter city setup, the Leica M Combination Bag by Billingham or the Domke F-3X carries less but sits closer to your body.
